What exactly is the nature of the state of mind that allows one to relate to difficult, painful, or potentially disconnected emotional experiences without being defined by them, and prevents one from trying to push away from these experiences by disconnecting from others or attempting to regulate their experiences in a dysfunctional way (Safran & Muran, 2000)? As this question suggests, early experiences shape how individuals view themselves in the world and subsequently interact in their relationship patterns with others. When these experiences have been damaged or difficult, this becomes the process in which those individuals interact with the world, typically with repeated negative consequences. The challenge of the Interpersonal Psychotherapy approach is to assist the individual in developing the awareness and insight necessary to identify these repeated themes/patterns in their relationships, and to utilize the therapeutic space as a vehicle to change their view of themselves and their interactions with others.
