evolution of slavery

While the Spanish and Portuguese had long established African slavery before colonizing the New World, the English did not. The English did not arrive in America with a plan for slavery, nor did they utilize this form of labor for decades after settlement. They tried a variety of forms of labor over time, before eventually embracing racial, hereditary, perpetual servitude, particularly in the South. Though the English certainly were familiar with other examples of this kind of slavery, they developed their own system, which was clearly defined and widely practiced by the early 18th century. How did this happen, and why?

You should plan to write a cohesive, formal essay, 700-800 words (about 2 pages), The formatting is the usual – double-spaced, standard margins, normal sized font (11 or 12 point, depending on which you choose) .

Do not use outside sources for this assignment. You should only be referencing class materials – the textbook, the “Evolution of slavery” set of primary source documents on Sakai, lectures and the documents and films we will cover in class. You do not need to use all of the documents, but you should use some of them, along with the textbook. The best papers tend to blend together a variety of different types of sources, making for a stronger case.

You can just use parenthetical citations (Author, page number) after something you wish to cite. Since you will all be using the same sources, there is no need for a works cited page.

And there are sources.
