America in a Changed World: Responding to Terror and Considering the Obama Legacy

Background and Sources to Consider: Between 2000 and 2016, the US experienced remarkable changes internationally and domestically. By any measure, the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, was a game changer. With that a long, still-ongoing “war on terror” began that meant military engagements overseas and increased domestic security measures. In 2008, remarkably, the US elected its first African American president, Barack Obama. He was elected to a second term in 2012. Our assigned chapter for this week is chapter 29, and it has excellent coverage of both subjects—be sure to make use of this in this discussion. It is the last chapter assigned in the course! Also, in the Week 10 unit, click on “Learn” and find the slide presentations of chapter highlights, but especially the videos there. Then click on “Week 10” and review the folder of PRIMARY SOURCES.

Doing this Discussion

WHAT TO DISCUSS:

Choose and discuss one of the following two topics related to the American experiences during the time of Presidents Bush and Obama. Consider the sources noted above. Develop your main post with a paragraph or two; tell us where you read about it—be sure to make some use of this week’s assigned chapter (chap. 29) and indicate the section or pages you used. Also, be sure there is plenty of “you” in your posts. Have fun with this and with reply posting to classmates:

A. 9/11 and its Impact: Describe what stands out to you (perhaps from memory) from the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Using the class text, give two examples of events or changes for US society since 9/11 that you attribute to that terrorist attack. In your view, what should we learn from this attack and our experiences trying to deal with it?
B. President Obama’s impact and legacy: Consider the elections of President Obama and his 8 years in office. Using the class text (additional good sources also ok), identify two specific examples of developments that you think are the most important parts of his presidency and legacy. Explain your choices.

Respond to at least one of your classmates and interact with that person’s information. Make sure to put forth at least a point or two of your own in at least one paragraph.

Discussion 2
CONNECTING WITH AMERICAN HISTORY: Ending this Journey

This week we have no new reading or subjects. Over the 11-week course, we have covered many events and issues that arose in the United States between 1865 and today. From the era of Reconstruction, the Progressive era and Jim Crow, the roaring 20s and the Great Depression, the Cold War and Civil Rights struggles, on through the age of Information to 9/11 events and to right now. We have seen many examples of people struggling for rights and freedoms and people having to adapt to significant changes in the economy, technology, laws, and society. We have seen military engagements impact lives and our country. Think about these various periods and challenges.

Please do BOTH of the following two things for your main post in our last discussion—this reflection:

1. Choose a specific historical event or example covered in our course and textbook and reflect on the “long range” effect of it on your own life.

2. Choose another historical event covered in our course and textbook and reflect on the “long range” impact on the modern workplace—perhaps on the profession you have chosen.

RESPOND also to at least one of your classmates and/or instructors. Feel free also to say fond farewells, any upcoming graduation note, etc.
