Cave of Forgotten Dreams discussion

In 3-4 sentences answer this discussions

In Werner Herzog’s film Cave of Forgotten Dreams, the viewer is taken on a tour of the Paleolithic murals from 30,000 BCE in the Chauvet Cave located in France. The filmmaker discusses the artists’ possible “vision” for the mural paintings.

  1. Answer the following questions:
    • Do you feel the Paleolithic artists considered how visitors would perceive their art?
    • How do you see the mural paintings as objects that go beyond an inventory or utilitarian observational tool?

Here’s a link for a video that you must watch before you do this discussion http://mediasite.ccs.ua-net.ua.edu/Mediasite/Play/…

  2. After you get this done, I want you to write a Respond to at least one classmate’s post by offering additional details or ideas, a different perspective, or links to interesting, relevant articles. Conclude with a question or new idea to further stimulate the discussion.
  3. Here’s two post you need to respond to just one of them!

1- I don’t think that artists during the Paleolithic time considered how visitors would perceive their art. Actually, I’m not sure I believe that the people during the Paleolithic times would have considered themselves as “artists” or should be considered today as such. It seems to me more likely that the art found in the caves was a way for the people to tell their stories, remember aspects of their lives, and record their findings. I also think the pictures served as a way for the people to communicate with each other in the absence of written language. I do think the paintings were also a form used for what we would call fun, but I don’t think it was necessarily art but just a form of expression.

2-I am honestly on the fence about whether Paleolithic artist considered how visitors would perceive their work. I want to say they did based on the location they chose for their artwork. If they did not want people to possibly view their work in the future they could have done it on a smaller, more personal scale. At the same time, I want to say they did not because I don’t think they anticipated the future response that the artwork would receive. The mural paintings go beyond an inventory because like many artists today they used it as an outlet and a way to express what they were interested in while also enjoying it.

Those are 3 directions to respond. Avoid plagiarism. The due date is on Nov 18 ( AT NOON)

1. Chapter 10 discusses idealism, the claim that nothing exists but our minds and their ideas. Many people find this a difficult theory to grasp, let alone accept. Watch the video below about idealism; it succinctly explains the theory as well as objections to it. Then, explain your understanding of idealism and your response to it. Do you accept idealism? Why or why not? If you don’t accept it, how do you refute it?

2. The film The Matrix is in large part based on Descartes’ Meditations, specifically the Evil Genius argument, and Plato’s allegory of the cave (video below). In The Matrix, one character, Cypher, wants to return to the matrix (a computer simulated reality), knowing full well that nothing he experiences there will be ‘real’ (see Agent Smith and Cypher video below). In thinking of how you value your experiences, specifically, what you value about them, is one criterion for assigning value related to whether or not an experience is real? Does it matter to you if something ‘really’ happened? Or, if you experience it as real, is that all that matters? If, at the end of your life, you were to find out that all of it had been a computer simulation, would that change the way you value the ‘experiences’ you had? Explain why or why not.

3. State your understanding of Descartes’ dream argument and his Evil Demon/Genius argument. Exactly how do you know that you are not dreaming right now? Given the strength of the Evil Demon argument, how do you think one can escape the skepticism it seems to entail? What do you think we can know with absolute certainty? Defend your response with reasons and examples.

Research Topic and Working Thesis

Research Topic and Working Thesis

Post information about the topic of your research for your paper on Death of a Salesman. Your posting and comments should address the following:

  • your potential thesis statement in bold
  • the reason you have chosen the topic for your research paper
  • the interest you have in the subject matter
  • any discoveries you have made about your topic through your research so far
  • Next, list at least three academic sources that you plan to use for your researched essay. Compose them as though they are entries in a Works Cited page. Make certain that they are listed in alphabetical order and use correct MLA format. Below is an example of a working bibliography: Goldman, Marlene. “Penning in the Bodies: The Construction of Gendered Subjects In Alice Munro’s Boys and Girls.” Studies in Canadian Literature / Études en littérature canadienne [Online], 15.1 (1990): n. pg. Web. 23 Nov. 2013.

The thesis statement you include here is a “working thesis”; you may find that you change and refine it as you continue to work on your researched essay. A good thesis is usually in third person (no “I” or “you”), is a statement (not a question), and tells the reader the main points you are claiming in your paper. Make sure that your claim is original and interesting, not simply an obvious statement of fact. Please see below for more information thesis statements:

council assignment

This project requires you to write a 3-to 4-page paper on a career of your choice. The paper should include paragraphs that cover the following topics:

1. Introduction

  • What is the occupation that you chose to research?
  • What are the reasons that you chose this occupation?
  • What is the nature of the job—what exactly does someone with this occupation do?
  • Did you find out anything that surprised you when you researched what this occupation does?

2. Work

  • What are the working conditions, including things like hours and vacation time?
  • What is the salary range and average salary? Where did you find this information?
  • What is the work environment like?
  • Does this look like something that would fit the lifestyle you envision for yourself and your future?

3. Preparation

  • What is the education necessary for an entry-level position?
  • What are some of the skills required for this job?
  • What are other qualifications—such as internships or advanced degrees—that you would need for an entry-level position?
  • Does this type of preparation fit well with what you know about yourself? Are you willing to put in the level of education necessary for this occupation? Do you possess the skills necessary for it, or do you feel you could gain those skills with proper education and preparation?

4. Job Outlook

  • What is the future outlook for this job? (growth faster than average, etc.)

  • What kind of on-going training is necessary for advancement in this field?
  • Does this look like an occupation that will continue to grow in the future and offer you a stable livelihood?

5. Conclusions

  • Refer to the results of your MYERS BRIGGS profile. You can also look at Chapter 12 p. 230 for a discussion of career interests. And go back to Chapter 2, p. 28 if you want to consider your values. VALUES, INTERESTS, and ABILITIES are three considerations when choosing a career. Be honest with yourself! Don’t live someone else’s dream.
  • Bearing all of this in mind, are you suited for this occupation? Why or why not?
  • What are some GOALS you can set for the next year to bring you closer to qualifying for this profession?

6. Sources

  • What sources did you use for this project? You must use at least THREE sources. Name all of them. (Even interviews with people already working in this field are fine; make sure you name who they are.)

Some sources you can use:

Use site ID code TSGEYKW

How your paper should be structured:

    1. You don’t need to use MLA, APA, or any other format to cite your references. You DO need to include an extra page that lists all of the references you used, though.

Portfolio Assignment 8.4, 8.5

THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS ASSIGNMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Portfolio Assignment 8.4: “William Wilson” Opinion Essay

“William Wilson” is a frightening tale of a school boy slowly and steadily falling into insanity while being haunted by his doppelgänger. Yet, this is just one small view of a much larger picture that Edgar Allan Poe is trying to reveal to the reader. You will be writing a short one-page essay on the following prompt:

What statement is Poe making in “William Wilson” about human nature and society in general? Explain how events in the story prove and support your opinion.

Your essay needs to be one page typed. It will be turned in with portfolio 2.

PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 8.5

Despite how you might feel about Poe’s work yourself there is no denying the brilliance of his writing. His ability to weave a tale which toys with our imaginations is nearly unsurpassed. Think back on his stories which you’ve read and see if you can remember these hallmarks of his style. In fact, these are generally good traits for any narrative.

  • An opening which introduces the audience to some or all of these elements: narrator, setting, the problem, characters. (Think about the opening of “William Wilson”—which of these were introduced?)
  • Notice how he uses reflection to get the reader inside the head of the narrator.
  • Poe varies the pacing of his stories, often using dialogue to slow time down and insert the reader into the story.
  • Description which does not detract from the story. Good detail and sensory description (description using the five senses) is key to a story but if it is done with a heavy hand it can ruin the story.
  • Poe’s conclusions, while often surprising, still feel as if they flow naturally from the previous scenes and details of the story.

Instead of relying upon one specific literary style or trick, Poe uses these and other techniques in combinations to draw the reader deeper into the story. Now that you’ve recognized these techniques and seen them used by a master, you get to implement them yourself.

Poe uses his excellent prose and narrative style to write fictional tales of suspense. You will do the same. I will walk you through the process of pre-writing then leave you to write your story. The first thing you’ve got to determine is what kind of scary or suspenseful story are you going to write. Will it be a supernatural thriller, or a suspenseful murder mystery, will there be ghosts, or an insane asylum?

Central Americans, in many ways, are a “transnational” people: their cultural, political, social, and economic practices, and the families and communities of the population itself, reach across international borders. What kinds of cross-border attachments, exchanges, and cultural practices or understandings connect people in Central America with people of Central American heritage in the United States? How do such connections operate, and what are their effects in Central American people’s lives in Central America and in the U.S.? Drawing from multiple sources of course material you may choose to discuss the transnational characteristics of Central American political or economic activities, family dynamics, racial or ethnic stereotypes or generalizations, and/or the social reproduction of Central American “places” outside of Central America itself.
