essay. philosophy

Philosophy is committed to inquiring into the reasons for our beliefs.

This commitment seems to engender, very naturally, a commitment to the idea that doing so is good for us and constitutes the essential component of our well-being. “The unexamined life is not worth living,” states Socrates.

The philosophers we have studied this semester differ on the nature of the universe, how to describe it, and what knowledge of it consists of — but they all agree that Philosophy amounts to taking care of one’s self. If it is possible for humans to be happy, it must be a happiness that is proper to our stature as rational beings, that makes the best use of our capabilities, and develops our potentials to the fullest.

Question

How does ancient philosophy help us to practice care of the self? How are we to define ‘the good life’, in this highest sense, and what activities are necessary for realizing it? Examine how the ancient philosophers we have studied (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus and other Stoics) contribute to our understanding of all that is involved in self-careand its relationship to true happiness. Which philosopher provides the strongest or most convincing definition of the human condition and the nature of wisdom, in your view? Overview their contributions to this question and assess their value for modern people in the 21st century. Why are their philosophies still relevant on this question?

Instructions:

Your essay should be from 1500-2000 words, and include the perspectives of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics. This assignment is meant to allow you to make some general observations and comparisons — there is enough room to provide each philosopher’s justification for his position, but avoid digressing into other topics that are not necessary for the question. Take a position and explain why one of these philosophers is more ‘right’ by making an argument about human nature and the needs of our society today. For the final section on the relevance of these ancient philosophers today, be sure to provide an argument that supports your opinion.

Can we learn anything from their writing that might help us to understand how to approach or cope with change today?

Keep in mind that your post needs to be at least 250 words in length.

Annotated bib and project proposal

Requirements:

Project proposal length: 350 words minimum

Annotated bibliography sources (Draft): 6

Annotated bibliography sources (Final): 8

Style guidelines: MLA

Due: 10/11

Instructions:

This assignment requires you to explore and evaluate current research related to your research question. You will survey and analyze the variety of sources you have found developing your research question and completing the previous ILPs. As you conduct more research throughout the semester, you will add additional bibliographic entries to this assignment. The first draft of the annotated bibliography must include at least 6 sources, while your final draft must have 10 sources total. MLA format requires your citations to be in alphabetical order, by the first word in the citation.

Annotated Bibliography:

Your sources should include:

  • At least three (3) scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.
  • At least two (2) contemporary periodicals (credible newspapers/websites)
  • At least one (1) non-text-based source, such as a Ted Talk, YouTube video, Podcast, etc.

Selecting good sources is important for this assignment. In order to select good sources, you will need to read through more than 6 periodicals and articles. Do not simply take the first few articles you can find. Remember, you are trying to select sources that can address your research question, not merely sources that are related to your “topic.” Putting the time into finding good sources now will save you effort later on in the semester.

For each source, write a proper MLA citation and an annotation that:

  1. Summarizes the central claim and major evidence of the source (1-2 sentences).
  2. Assesses the credibility, relevance, timing, and bias of the source (1-2 sentences).
  3. Reflects on the suitability, utility, or applicability of the source for your project (1 sentence) (If you have a difficult time answering this, you should find a new source).

Project Proposal (350 words minimum):

After you have completed gathering your initial 6 sources, you will write a project proposal that explains your research project. Using all of the sources you have annotated, you will outline the positions and conversations surrounding your argument, and develop a detailed thesis as a preliminary answer to your research question. You should not merely “parrot” or “mirror” the conclusion of a single source. Instead, you should address how you plan on using each of your sources together to put forward an initial answer to your research question. You do not need to revise the project proposal for your final draft; you are only required to add 4 additional annotations to your bibliography. These additions should adhere to the requirements listed above.

The TOPIC is–Immigration in the United States

POLI330N The party is over by David Drehle analysis

The Party’s Over. (Or Is It?)

For those of you that follow politics, you might have heard the following statements before:

  1. We have a two-party system.
  2. The Republican Party is in crisis.
  3. The Democratic Party is in crisis.

Regarding #1, it is certainly true that the two major parties dominate up and down the ballot across a vast majority of the United States. Regarding #2 and #3, these are claimed by a variety of pundits on a regular basis. So what does it mean?

Please take a moment to read the following:

What makes today’s conflicts inside the major parties different from intramural elbow-throwing in the past? The rapid rise of unmediated democracy, enabled by the digital revolution. For generations, the major parties have served as rival department stores anchoring opposite ends of America’s political shopping mall. They chose which products to offer and favored certain ones with their most prominent displays. They marshaled big budgets for advertising and thus loomed over the boutiques and specialty stores — the greens, the libertarians and so on — serving smaller clienteles.

Smartphones and the Internet are killing big retail by connecting buyers directly to products. The same is in store for the major parties. Donald Trump went directly to the voters through Facebook and Twitter; they, in turn, swept him past Republican gatekeepers to commandeer the mannequins and display cases of the GOP. Likewise, Sanders has found plenty of volunteers and cash to support his attempted hostile takeover of the Democratic Party. Voters no longer need — nor, in many cases, want — a political party to screen their candidates and vet their ideas. They prefer to build their own movements, often with stunning speed.

(Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/both-political-parties-may-be-doomed/2017/10/20/4c6cf8b2-b5ca-11e7-be94-fabb0f1e9ffb_story.html?utm_term=.8a3fbe480eb1) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Of course, this is just one man’s prediction of more independent and third-party candidates becoming viable in the eyes of voters. However, it should be noted that although figures like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders rose to increased political prominence in 2016 as self-identified outsiders, they did so within the major parties for a reason.

Gender inequality and its perpetuation

Where does gender inequality come from? How is it perpetuated?

Here are some potential questions to help you frame your response: Do you agree that subsistence strategy is an important factor to examine when studying the sources of power in a society? How might hunting have led to men in power? What about the role of agriculture in inhibiting women from gaining power? Do you find this believable?

How can we explain the persistence of gender inequality if we have overcome the biological factors that led to its inception?

Resources MUST USE! don’t need to cite sources just use information from these.

Read the two primary source assignments on the Vikings

Read the two primary source assignments on the Vikings, which are the account of how Iceland accepted Christianity, from Njal’s Sage, and the Arabic traveler Ibn Fadlan’s impressions of the Viking Rus in Eastern Europe. Based on your findings from these readings, write a short essay, of 1-2 double-spaced pages, on the subject of what factors influence interactions between different religions. The factors could be such things as culture, power dynamics, convenience, the need for peaceful trade and economic interaction, etc. We have, in these readings, an account of the interactions between Christianity and Viking paganism, on the one hand, and the interactions between Islam and Viking beliefs, on the other hand. What caused these inter-religious interactions to be peaceful or violent? How might the beliefs and biases of each group have affected how they viewed the other groups?
