WW2 and the Civil Rights movement were two huge times in our world where changes occurred. WW2 raged across six continents and killed more than 50 million people. It also ended the great depression. The Civil Rights movement made it possible for African Americans to be treated equal, but was the WW2 era a watershed for the Civil Rights movement?

James Nuechterlein argues that yes, the WW2 era was a watershed for the Civil Rights movement. He believes that WW2 improved the employment opportunities for African Americans. Since they needed everybody to participate in the war they could not afford to exclude blacks from jobs. This was huge for the civil rights movement. Also, the struggle with Hitler helped with the equality of races.

Harvard Sitkoff argues that no, the WW2 era was not a watershed for the Civil Rights movements. He believes that the war made it to where African Americans struggled to fight for their rights because they were busy fighting for white people. They had to fight in the war if they wanted to be able to fight for their rights and equality. African Americans had to be 100% loyal and in order for them to benefit later they had to fight for the United States right then. Because of this a lot of African American organizations and newspapers were quiet on issues such as racial equality suffering because of the war. Sitkoff is stating that they fought less for themselves during WW2, and that’s why it was not a turning point for them during that time.

I agree that WW2 was a watershed for the Civil Rights movement because yes the war made it hard for African Americans to fight for themselves, but it was still a success for them in ways of employment and equality. With the war going on the government needed African Americans because they couldn’t have fought in the war without their help. I think that was a huge moment for African Americans to be seen as equal, and for the government to realize that they are people too. WW2 and the Civil Rights movement both played a huge role in history. I believe our world would not be the same today if they did not occur. We needed both in order for things to change within our society and within our lives.
