Prompt: At first glance Katherine appears as the shrew, but perhaps the play has a more subtle message, that, in fact, the shrew is Petruchio. After all, Petruchio decides he will marry Kate, even before she has met him, and insists that she will marry him regardless of her feelings on the matter: “Thus in plain terms: your father hath consented / That you shall be my wife; your dowry ‘greed on; / And, Will you, nill you, I will marry you” (II, i). Also a crude, drunken bully, he behaves more like a caveman than a suitor of his period. In the end Kate’s changes appear obvious; however, Petruchio’s alterations are arguably greater.
